GetFundedAfrica’s Inspiring STEM Workshop for Young Minds-A Recap

In a world driven by technology and innovation, the importance of fostering a love for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among the younger generation cannot be overstated. GetFundedAfrica, a company known for its dedication to supporting startups and entrepreneurs, recently demonstrated how a small idea can create a big impact. They organized a one-day STEM workshop for young children, irrespective of it being unrelated to their core business. The result was nothing short of remarkable.

The event, held in the Innovation clusters of Ogun and Oyo State, brought together more than 50 schools and approximately 500 enthusiastic boys and girls. Many of these students hailed from low-income communities, making the event even more meaningful. It was an opportunity to open their eyes to a world of possibilities.

The workshop commenced with a panel discussion featuring esteemed guests who shared their experiences in the STEM field. The panelists included Muyiwa Bamgbose, CEO of the Educational Advancement Center; Ashley Immanuel, Co-Founder at Semicolon; Oluwaferanmi Owolabi, Head of Purple Academy at Wema Bank; Idowu Akinde, Managing Partner at Boolean Labs; and Mrs. Adekunte, representing the Ogun State Government. Their insights and stories served as an inspiration for the young minds in attendance.

During the event, Oludare Olarewaju, CEO at Oxratech, delivered an enlightening talk on the connection between technology and agriculture. He emphasized the pivotal role that technology plays in transforming and modernizing the agricultural sector, offering innovative solutions to enhance food production and sustainability. Oludare Olarewaju’s words were inspiring, as he stated, “Technology is not just about gadgets and apps; it’s a powerful tool that can revolutionize the way we grow our food and tackle the challenges of agriculture.”

The event also featured an opening speech by the Director for Technology, Mrs. Adekunte , representing the state government.

In her address, she expressed her excitement about the workshop and highlighted the importance of STEM education for the future of the youth. she said,

STEM education is the gateway to a brighter tomorrow, and it’s heartening to see so many young minds here today, eager to explore the world of science and technology. We believe in the potential of these children to become the innovators and problem solvers of the future.”

The highlight of the event was a captivating drone workshop led by Prof. Oluwakayode Adebowale and Gael Ruta Gatera. The children were fascinated as they learned about the exciting world of drone technology. It was an opportunity for them to witness the practical application of STEM concepts.

The workshop also featured a Python programming session led by Cynthia Ibegbu, with support from members of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Professionals’ Junior Chapter, Sam and Joseph Adebowale. The hands-on experience and guidance provided by these experts allowed the young participants to delve into the world of coding.

One crucial aspect of the event was the provision of practice kits by the University of Connecticut. These kits ensured that the children had access to the necessary tools and resources to enhance their learning experience. The support from the university was instrumental in making the workshop a success.

Special recognition is due to Prof. Oluwakayode Adebowale, who flew in from the United States to coordinate between the US and Nigerian teams. His dedication and expertise greatly contributed to the event’s success. Abiodun Oshodi also played a crucial role by providing logistics support, ensuring that the workshop ran smoothly.

GetFundedAfrica expressed gratitude to Stephany Santos at the Vergnano Institute of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Connecticut for enabling them to use their programs, EYF & MNO, for this workshop. The collaboration with the university played a pivotal role in making the event a reality.

Moreover, the support and participation of key figures in the educational and governmental sectors cannot be overlooked. Prof. Arigbabu, the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, and Mr. Dayo Abiodun, the Special Adviser to the Governor on ICT, were essential in ensuring the event’s success.

GetFundedAfrica’s STEM workshop for young kids is a shining example of how a small idea driven by a desire to make a positive impact can have a profound influence on the lives of young children. By exposing them to the exciting possibilities of STEM, the workshop has sowed the seeds of curiosity and ambition, offering these children the chance to dream big and reach for the stars. In the end, it’s a testament to the power of technology, education, and community coming together to shape a brighter future for the next generation.
