Mastercard Foundation and University of Rwanda announce US$55mn partnership to help enhance the development of next-generation African leaders

The Mastercard Foundation has teamed with the University of Rwanda in announcing a decades-long $55mn partnership to deliver higher education access for over 1200 Africans. A key focus will go towards women pursuing STEM, the disabled, refugees, and displaced youth. the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program was launched in 2012 and is part of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.

It is committed to developing the next generation of transformative African leaders by equipping economically disadvantaged youth with leadership development, skills training, mentoring, counseling, internships, and career services. Thus far the program has committed over 40,000 scholarships to date.

The University of Rwanda is the largest higher education institution across Rwanda operating on a mission to produce transformative and highly enterprising leaders. In addition to ex[dressing thrill over the scholar’s program, Mastercard Foundation CEO Reeta Roy said that the “mission and programs of the University are inextricably linked to the country’s national goals.”

The partnership will enhance the university’s capacity to deliver inclusive, blended learning while contributing to a robust knowledge ecosystem that supports new and meaningful pathways that work for the young. Professor Alexandre Lyambabaje, the University of Rwanda Vice-Chancellor expressed a strong belief in the vision of the Mastercard Foundation. He further pointed out that the program aligns with the Rwanda National Transformation Strategy where its impact will resonate with other stakeholders.
