Developing Leadership Through Practice

Leaders are made, they are not born.

– Vince Lombardi

Is leadership inborn or can you develop it as a skill with the help of learning and practice? While some people believe either of the two, it is also safe to say that it is a little bit of both. For more context, developing leadership through practice in this discourse centers heavily on leading through example. This involves behaving in a way that shows others how to behave.

One of the most essential reasons for practicing leadership is that it demonstrates your personal integrity and ethics as a leader. When you lead by example, you show others in the workplace that you are capable and willing to do the tasks you have assigned to them, as well as how to execute those responsibilities.

Leading by example establishes synergy between what you say and what you do, as well as a workplace culture of mutual respect, which encourages the entire team to operate more successfully together.

So, what specifically does leadership through practice involve? Here are some tips to help you lead by example in your workplace.

  • Improve Your Leadership Skills.

Understand that leaders can still grow. It is important to indicate to your team that you are aware that you do not have all of the answers but that you are devoted to receiving the information, education, and insight required to excel in your position.

Read books and participate in seminars to hone your leadership skills and discover new ones. Keep an open mind to team feedback and communicate effectively; this will help them trust your leadership while also inspiring them.

  • Build a Foundation of Trust.

One way to build trust is to uphold your commitments and to be open and transparent with your team members. This reflects your level of devotion to the team and helps them have faith in you as a leader.

You may find that they may be more willing to ask questions, take on additional responsibilities, and be a more active part of the team.

  • Work Closely with Your Team.

It is important to collaborate with and alongside your team. This will help you understand their specific talents, projects, and even any work challenges they may be facing, enabling you to lead them better, identify their needs, and steer them to success.

The more closely you work with them, the greater the team’s trust and understanding. This is also beneficial to team morale.

  • Adhere to The Set Rules.

To lead by example, follow the rules you’ve set and the rules of the organization. If you do, your team is less likely to bend or break the rules, which helps the workplace function more cohesively.

Pay attention to your own behavior and follow the rules you’ve set out for others. This shows integrity and is a great way to lead by example.

“It is not fair to ask of others what you are not willing to do yourself.”

  • Place Trust in Your Team.

Start by ensuring that your team understands the company’s vision, values, and goals, as well as how they contribute to the organization’s success.

Remember that each employee was recruited for a specific reason, and everyone has a unique skill set and expertise. Trust your team to execute their tasks successfully, and you might not only earn their respect but also act as an inspiration to other workplace leaders.

  • Consider The Importance of Your Words and Actions.

You should be aware that your words and actions might be misinterpreted. If you’re leading by example, consider how your team could interpret what you say and do so you can be more mindful of your attitude and actions.

Even in challenging work conditions, strive to stay positive and encourage your team. Your team should pick up on your attitude and naturally reflect it, resulting in a productive workforce that supports one another and takes a proactive approach to getting the job done.

  • Pay Attention to Your Employees.

Listen to your employees, your coworkers, and even the leaders to whom you report. Everyone has something valuable to offer in a conversation. Additionally, paying attention to your team proves to them that you value them as people and the work they do, and that you want to learn more about them so you can lead effectively.

Engage with them in meaningful ways so that they have faith in your expertise and feel safe approaching you with any difficulties. The more you listen, the more you will understand.

These are some of the ways that you can lead by example. To be an effective leader, you must set a great example. This should result in a creative, productive, and happy workplace where all team members feel appreciated and do whatever it takes to help the group succeed.
