The impact-focussed Vumela Fund established by FNB Business and Edge Growth has made an investment in Kusini Water – a cleantech enterprise that provides clean drinking water for the local communities and corporates.
Kusini water manufacturers mobile solar-powered water purification systems with materials fully derived from macadamia nut shells and nanotechnology that are locally sourced.
The investment in Kusini Water will expand operations and boosts its ability to provide clean, safe drinking water to people in Africa’s rural, peri-urban and informal settlements. The manufacture and assembling of water filtration and treatment systems are powered by IoT technology.

Philani Mzila at Edge Growth described Kusini water as “an innovative and highly impactful business.” Led by CEO Murendeni Mafumo Kusini Water was founded in 2017. Its first system was built in Shayandima, Thohoyandou in Limpopo. To date, the business runs over 30 sites providing over 3 million liters of water to communities and corporates every month.
The Vumela fund, established in 2009, has raised R588m across 3 separate funds and has made 19 investments to date from Fund 1 and Fund 2. Kusini Water took part in FNB’s Social Entrepreneurship Impact Lab programme receiving business development support and grant investments.
