Seven startups in Uasin Gishu County have each received Ksh. 1 million from Mozilla and the Gladys Boss Foundation to help them improve their products and take them to the next level.
The startups are developing a variety of solutions to problems in education, media and agriculture, and housekeeping.
The announcement was made during a workshop for students and tech startups held in Eldoret over the Easter weekend as part of Mozilla’s Mashinani Initiative, which is part of the Mozilla Africa Mradi.
These start-ups are:
Tindo
A video-on-demand platform that caters specifically to filmmakers from diverse indigenous communities in the region.
My Shule
A simple phone app that ensures the safe transportation of students to and from school in real-time via a live bus map. It notifies the app user when their child arrives at school and when they are on their way home.
Mche
Provides a comprehensive solution to smallholder farmers by advising them on the best crops to grow in their respective geographical areas.
Mama Fua
A mobile app that connects households with trained and vetted housekeepers, allowing for safe, convenient, and automated access to cleaning services.
Lifeline
It provides quick access to critical medical information during an emergency and assists individuals with disabilities and those who cannot communicate on their own behalf.
M-Rafiki
A platform that allows people to connect and interact while providing access to services and businesses they may require.
Gavo Foods
Produces gluten-free-keto organic flours.
Alice Munyua, Senior Director of Mozilla Corporation, stated, “Mozilla is expanding efforts to build with and not for African communities while promoting models of innovation that empowering, inclusive, and grounded in the unique needs of users in the African continent.”
Mozilla hopes to spark innovation by forging new, closer connections with regional partners to understand better how African product demand and capacity shortages intersect.
The Mashinani Initiative will culminate in the groundbreaking Mozilla Africa Mradi Innovation Challenge, which will take place in Nairobi in June 2023.
