GetFundedAfrica to Host STEM Programs for Nigerian Students in Collaboration with UConn and NSBE Professionals
In a remarkable step towards empowering young minds in Nigeria, GetFundedAfrica is set to host two groundbreaking STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs in conjunction with the University of Connecticut and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Professionals. The initiative, taking place at the Ogun Tech Hub in Abeokuta on the 3rd of November 2023, will cater to 500 young students.
For girls, the ‘Multiply Your Options’ (MYO) program will be hosted, where 250 JSS3 female students will gather at the Ogun Tech Hub in Abeokuta. Notably, MYO is an annual one-day conference that traditionally takes place at the University of Connecticut but is now making its debut in Nigeria. The program is designed to introduce these students to future academic and career opportunities within STEM and provide them with the opportunity to interact with female role models in STEM fields.
The significance of such exposure cannot be overstated; by connecting young women with professional engineers actively working in the industry, the MYO program aims to expand their horizons and acquaint them with career possibilities that have historically eluded them, thereby significantly multiplying their options.
The program intends to engage 50 schools, both public and private, in the tri-State area of Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo, with each school bringing in 5 female students. Schools interested in participation can apply for consideration here.
Concurrently, the ‘Engineering Your Future (EYF)’ program will cater to 250 JSS3 male students, also at the Ogun Tech Hub in Abeokuta on the same date. EYF has been meticulously designed with hands-on, inquiry-based activities to educate, excite, and encourage participants to explore educational and career opportunities within STEM subjects.
The primary aim of EYF is to introduce young boys to role models in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, thereby igniting a passion to pursue STEM fields and realize their full potential.
Similarly, 50 schools in the tri-State area of Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo will be involved, with each school bringing 5 male students. Schools interested in participating can submit their applications here.
It’s essential to note that this program is entirely free, but registration and selection of participating schools are necessary to ensure the smooth execution of these initiatives.
The programs have received support from the University of Connecticut Vergano Institute for Diversity and Inclusion, which will provide the necessary kits.
