The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) and the ICT Authority (ICTA) have signed a contract to improve last-mile fiber optic cable connections in 19 underserved and unserved counties.
The CA will give KSh 5 billion ($37 million) from the Universal Service Fund to help put fiber in place in the counties listed (USF).
This fits with the USF’s goal of making it easier to bring communications and infrastructure services to unserved and underserved areas.
As part of efforts to improve access to broadband across the country, the project helps the Government Digital Transformation Agenda (GoDTA) reach its goal of installing 100,000 kilometers of fiber.
Turkana, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Lamu, Kilifi, Kwale, Kitui, Laikipia, Isiolo, Garissa, Wajir, Kitui, Makueni, and Narok are the counties that this project focuses on.
